Greek Glossary
- ACTIVE
- A member of a fraternity or sorority who has been initiated and is in good standing with their chapter.
- ALUMNI/AE
- Initiated fraternity or sorority members who have graduated from college.
- BID
- A formal invitation to join a particular sorority or fraternity.
- BIG BROTHER/BIG SISTER
- An active member who serves as a mentor to a new member during their new member program.
- CHAPTER
- A chartered undergraduate or alumni group that is recognized by the Inter/National sorority or fraternity.
- CHARTER
- The official document drafted by an inter/national fraternity or sorority that allows for the creation of a local chapter affiliated with a college or university campus.
- CONTINUOUS OPEN BIDDING (COB)
- Informal recruitment process that takes place after the conclusion of Formal Panhellenic Recruitment.
- FOUNDERS DAY
- An event celebrated by fraternities and sororities to highlight their organization's founding and history.
- INTERFRATERNITY COUNCIL (IFC)
- The governing body of Auburn’s 27 social fraternities.
- INTERNATIONAL/NATIONAL HEADQUARTERS
- The central organization of a particular fraternity or sorority.
- LEGACY
- A prospective member whose parent, sibling, or grandparent is an alumnae/alumni or active sorority or fraternity member.
- LINE
- The persons who were initiated together. The term is primarily used in NPHC and multicultural Greek letter organizations.
- MEMBERSHIP INTAKE
- The process of acquiring membership into NPHC and some multicultural Greek letter organizations, which may include an application and interview process before selected candidates begin the new member education process.
- NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL (NPHC)
- The governing body for the 8 black Greek-lettered organizations at Auburn. This is also the name of the national governing body and is sometimes referred to as the Divine Nine.
- NEOPHYTE (NEO)
- A new member of an NPHC organization during his/her first year of membership or until they bring in new members.
- NEW MEMBER/PLEDGE
- A member of a fraternity or sorority going through the new member education/pledging process.
- NEW MEMBERSHIP PRESENTATION SHOW/PROBATE
- After initiation, newly initiated members will participate in a new member presentation show on campus to announce their membership in their organization.
- ORDER OF OMEGA
- The premiere leadership honor society for members of Auburn Greek organizations.
- PANHELLENIC COUNCIL
- The governing body for the 18 National Panhellenic Conference sororities/women’s fraternities at Auburn.
- PHILANTHROPY
- A charitable fundraiser sponsored by a sorority or fraternity.
- PI CHI
- A member of the Panhellenic community who guides and supports potential new members (PNMs) during the primary recruitment process.
- POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER (PNM)
- A college student participating in recruitment.
- PROPHYTE
- A neophyte becomes a prophyte after another line is initiated.
- RECRUITMENT/RUSH CHAIR
- An active member of a sorority or fraternity who is in charge of recruitment efforts for the chapter.
- RHO LAMBDA
- A leadership honor society recognizing outstanding women with the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Panhellenic Council.
- STEPPING
- A creative form of artistic dance and musical entertainment unique to culturally based fraternities and sororities, especially those of historically African American heritage.
- STROLL
- An informal form of stepping.
- YARD
- The campus.
